That’s not just a silly phrase--it’s actually part of a vocal warm-up I once heard about. The idea? Use it to drop your voice, slow your tempo, and relax your speaking muscles.
Surprisingly, it works. Especially for learners of English whose first language is Polish.
Here’s why lowering the voice often helps Polish speakers (and many others) sound better in English:
  1. Intonation and Stress Patterns Improve
Polish is a syllable-timed language with fairly regular stress, whereas English is stress-timed and relies heavily on pitch variation. When Polish speakers try to imitate English prosody, they often default to a high or tense pitch, which can sound unnatural or "foreign." Lowering the voice helps them relax into a more natural rhythm and melody of English.
  2. Tension Drops--Pronunciation Improves
A higher pitch often comes with physical tension, especially in the jaw and throat. Lowering the voice helps reduce this tension, which in turn makes articulation smoother and consonants/vowels clearer.
  3. Perception of Confidence and Fluency
Lower voices are generally perceived as more confident and authoritative. This perception can positively affect how fluency is judged, especially in second language speakers. Polish learners might actually sound more fluent when speaking from a relaxed, grounded tone.
